London Councils is seeking assurances that Londoners will not be hit if boroughs budgets are cut under the national concessionary fares scheme.
The organisation has written to transport secretary, Lord Adonis, to express its fear that the Government is planning to reduce the £55M funding the capital was set to receive for providing the service next year.
The boroughs estimate that a funding shortfall would cost Londoners an average of £18 per household or leave councils having to make ‘painful decisions’ over services.
Chairman of London Councils, Merrick Cockell, said it was worrying that the Government would even contemplate going back on its word. ‘The whole point of the deal was to allow boroughs to cover the cost of providing free bus travel for disabled and older residents.’
