London charges ahead with electric car promotion

The UK’s first on-street recharging points for electric cars have been unveiled in central London.
Westminster City Council launched the free service in Wellington Street and Southampton Street in Covent Garden. The two points add to the 48 charging points in 13 of the council’s car parks. If the pilot project is successful, the council plans to roll out the charging points across the city, in a bid to boost take-up of electric cars in the capital.
Councillor Alan Bradley said: ‘Electric cars are ideally suited to city driving and we hope in years to come, we will see more and more people using them to travel. London, and particularly Westminster, has well-documented problems with air quality, and electric cars are an ideal way to start dealing with them.’
