London bus services hit as Metroline drivers walk out over pay

Parts of London’s bus network almost ground to a halt on Tuesday with only a handful of Metroline services running, as workers walked out for the first time in seven years in a dispute over pay.
Thousands of commuters in the capital struggled to and from work following the one-day action by Transport and General Workers Union (T&G) members.
Pickets were up at Metroline garages and depots from 4am, with T&G getting solid support in the action, but admitting some services were still operating.
Jim Buckley, T&G regional industrial organiser, said: ‘All of the big garages reported strong support from members. Our message to the travelling public is, we are taking strike action as a last, not a first, resort, but bus drivers and engineers deserve better on pay.’
According to the union, the current Metroline offer of 4% fell short of pay offers from the rest of London’s bus operators.
