London borough targets high polluters with parking hike

Drivers of 4x4 and other high-polluting vehicles could face huge charges to park outside their homes in southwest London.

Richmond upon Thames Council announced this week plans to charge more for residents’ parking permits for cars producing higher CO2 emissions and less for the least-polluting vehicles.
The scheme, which will be discussed by the council’s cabinet on 6 November, after being reviewed by the environment and sustainability overview and scrutiny committee on 1 November, could even see the lowest-emitting vehicles paying nothing, with others qualifying for reductions of up to 50%.
It is the first time any authority in the country has planned to charge residents for on-street parking linked to pollution generated by their vehicle. The plans would see residents with high-emission cars parking costs rise from £100 to £300.
