London borough looks to Mars

A 10-week project to reinforce a bridge and create an extra lane for emergency service vehicles is under way in east London.
Work on the Whitmore Road Bridge, over Regent’s Canal in Hackney, began on 8 January, causing a five-and-a-half week closure of the canal and towpath from this week to 23 February.
The work, funded by Transport for London, through the London Borough of Hackney, is being carried out by the council’s contractor, Maintenance and Restoration Services (Mars).
The strengthening scheme consists of reinforcing the brick arch with a stainless steel grid, so the bridge can be used by some public service vehicles and for buses on diversions. The existing 7.5t weight limit will remain in place for all other vehicles, once the work is complete.
