London: Borough plans holistic approach to save energy

A London council is to create a ‘multi-utilities services company’ to install and operate locally-generated heat and area-wide broadband cabling.
Southwark believes a holistic approach to utilities provision is the only way to triple the number of homes and businesses in Elephant and Castle without increasing emissions.

The £1.5bn regeneration scheme would aim to be energy self-sufficient using combined heat and power, solar, wind and biomass.
Traffic disruption would be minimised by having one trench in the main street’s central reservation.
