Locals offered DIY solution to reclaim streets

Residents of five communities have been awarded the chance to redesign their own streets through a charity initiative.

Sustainable transport group Sustrans has named the first areas selected for the DIY Streets Project, which aims to overcome problems such as anti-social parking and speeding traffic in a similar way to Home Zones.

The five streets, including two in the London boroughs of Hackney and Islington and others in Cardiff, Manchester and Sheff-ield, are to be redesigned for less than £100,000.

Peter Lipman, DIY Streets project director, said: ‘Some of the most important aims of Home Zone design can be achieved simply and at relatively little cost.’ Under the scheme, Sustrans will meet with residents to discuss specific problems and offer different ways to overcome these.

The group will then help residents source funding to get things started. The work, which in the pilot scheme in Bristol included widening pavements, installing bollards and planters and laying cycle paths, is designed to slow down traffic and make streets safer for those not in cars.
