Six firms are lining up to operate services on Cambridgeshire's £86M guided bus scheme.
Four firms operating locally – Stagecoach, Burton Coaches, and Huntingdon & District and Whippet – have been joined by national operators Go-Ahead and the First Group in expressing an interest in running buses on the 25km segregated route.
Cambridgeshire project officer, Bob Menzies, said more than one could be chosen – but there would not be competition on fares or timetables, because the county could specify them under the busway order.
‘Operators will be able to run different routes off the segregated track, which is where they can compete – given this major advantage over trams.’
The county submitted the business case for the scheme to the Government this week, and hopes for a decision within 10 weeks to allow construction to start in the autumn
