Liverpulians still have rights

Liverpool City Council has denied that rights of way in the city centre will be eroded as part of the £1bn Liverpool One retail development.

A University of Liverpool lecturer has criticised the council for allowing the ‘privatisation’ of 35 city centre streets.

Traditional public rights of way have been replaced by agreements on public access with Grosvenor Estates, which the city had leased the streets to, said Roy Coleman, lecturer in criminology.

But Liverpool cabinet member for regeneration, Cllr Mike Burchnall, insisted there would be ‘open access’ to the development. Liverpool residents ‘wouldn’t notice any difference’, he said.
