Liverpool’s snap decision to outlaw bus lane offenders

Camera enforcement on Liverpool’s bus lanes is set to be introduced to crack down on the majority of drivers who abuse the regulations.

Initially, cameras will monitor three lanes in the city centre, but the scheme could be extended to other key routes in the city. Drivers who flout bus lane regulations will be fined £60, reduced to £30 on early payment. Surveys have shown that in the three initial sites identified, up to 77% of motorists abuse the bus lane.

The cost of implementing the scheme, which could be in operation later this summer, is £235,000, with running costs of £210,000 a year.

‘We would be happy if we did not raise a penny from this type of enforcement because that would mean motorists were not abusing bus lanes,’ said Councillor Meter Millea, executive member for assets and development.
