The Department for Transport has approved Liverpool City Council’s request to give immediate information on unplanned incidents and emergencies using 29 variable-message signs on main routes.
‘Non-standard messages’, requiring DfT approval, will allow the city council to give motorists advice on closures, to ‘avoid congestion more easily’. To date, the council could only display standard road safety messages.
Cllr Barbara Mace, assistant executive member for regeneration, said such messages should only be used at appropriate times, ‘to ensure that they do not lose their impact’. Information on planned highway works and special events such as the Open Golf tournament would also be displayed.
Cllr Mace said it would also be useful for providing information to the expected influx of visitors for the 2008 Capital of Culture. VMS is part of the urban traffic control system operated by the city’s joint venture company, 2020 Liverpool.
