Liverpool fly-tipping accounts for half national total

Around 2.5M incidents of fly-tipping were reported by local authorities between May 2005 and April 2006, costing almost £100M to clear up, according to the Countryside Alliance.
Liverpool City Council reported 1,249,527 fly-tipping incidents, more than half the nationwide figure, and dwarfing the 161,898 incidents reported by second-placed Sheffield. The London boroughs of Haringey, Kensington & Chelsea, Southwark and Lewisham were all in the top 10 fly-tipping hotspots. However, despite the scale of fly-tipping reported, just one in every 100 fly-tipper was prosecuted over the year. The research found that household black bags accounted for 63% of materials fly-tipped, while back alleyways were the most common fly-tipping location (56%), followed by highways (22%), and council land (15%).
