Litter powers sweep in

New measures under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act to combat litter came into force this week.
Local authorities can issue fines of up to £80 – and keep the revenue – to anybody caught dropping litter, which now includes cigarette butts, chewing gum, and litter deposited on land or water.
