Light rap for water firm

A council is to register a formal objection to plans by a water company to discontinue using ultra violet disinfection during the winter.

Durham County Council thinks the move, by Northumbrian Water, is a ‘retrograde step’ and will reverse the current trend of increasing recreational use of the region’s sea and coast – something the authority has invested in heavily in recent years.

Bob Pendlebury, cabinet member with responsibility for environmental improvement, said: ‘More than £100M has been invested by a number of organisations in regenerating the coast and its communities through the Turning the Tide project and other initiatives.’
