Life in the M27 slow lane has just got better

Two new climbing lanes on the M27 in Hampshire were opened for drivers this week.

The lanes are located on the M27 eastbound, from junction 11 (Fareham), and westbound from junction 12 (M275 Portsmouth).

Some 4km in total of new lanes have been added to the motorway.

The scheme, which will give more opportunity for overtaking slow traffic on the inclines, will being fewer delays and improved safety through the separation of slower and faster-moving vehicles.

The £18M project has been built entirely within existing highway boundaries, minimising the impact on the environment and surrounding communities.

Stephen Coe, project manager for the Highways Agency, said: ‘The M27 is a major route linking Southampton and Portsmouth, and the climbing lanes and widening works between junctions 3 and 4 to be completed this winter, will improve safety and journey reliability.’
