Libs Dems back A1 upgrade

The Liberal Democrats have pledged to support dualling of the A1 and A69, and develop further shared-space initiatives, after replacing Labour as the dominant party in Northumberland.

In the local elections last week, Labour lost power of Northumberland for the first time since 1989, winning only 17 wards – the same number as the Tories – against 26 for the Lib Dems.

The results left no party in overall control of the forthcoming unitary council, but it is up to the Lib Dems to form an administration to run the council.

In addition to the A1 and A69 pledge, the party says it will link with Newcastle City Council to submit a joint Transport Innovation Fund bid, and ‘further develop the shared-space concept’.
