Levy hike takes toll on unity

Mersey Tunnel tolls will rise by 10p to £1.40 from April, despite less than half of the transport authority’s board backing the decision.

Just six of Merseytravel’s 18-strong board voted for the rise, which will bring in an additional £3.6M for the transport authority. And even though the decision received six votes against four, eight councillors abstained.

All those who voted against were Wirral representatives, while those in favour were from Liverpool, Knowsley and Sefton.

A Merseytravel spokesman said: ‘Operating and maintenance costs of the tunnels, which are vital to ensure public safety, do not remain static. They rise with inflation, usually more.’
