Level crossings face being held up for scrutiny by partners

West Sussex County Council has formed a partnership with Network Rail, in an effort to ease congestion and pollution at level crossings.

The new Road Rail Partnership Group will look at 40 level crossings on the county’s roads, 28 of which are located along the coast between Southbourne and Shoreham. Each crossing will be looked at in terms of safety, traffic flow and congestion, and a priority list for action will then be drawn up with possible solutions to problems assessed and costed.

Lieutenant Colonel Tex Pemberton, West Sussex cabinet member for highways and transport, said: ‘This is an exciting opportunity, and I welcome the commitment from Network Rail to tackle an issue that is causing real problems.

‘It could ultimately lead to the use of more bridges or even diverting some roads.’ He said the partnership could bring funding streams together from the county council, Network Rail and developer contributions towards transport improvements via district and borough councils. ‘In the past, finance has been the real issue, with some schemes put forward which are too ambitious for the county council to consider alone.’ The partnership will also look at the safety and need for the 73 public footpaths crossing railway lines in East Sussex.
