Leicestershire bypass project under way

Work is to start on a long-awaited £15M bypass to tackle congestion in Earl Shilton in Leicestershire.

The road will reduce journey times for drivers on the A47 and ease traffic congestion in the town centre. Some site preparation has already been carried out, but the main work will start next week.

The scheme has been designed by Leicestershire County Council and is to be constructed by Alfred McAlpine Project Services. It is due to be completed by December 2008.

Local residents and businesses also have the chance to take a closer look at the bypass plans at an exhibition in Earl Shilton Methodist Church Hall, being held next Thursday.

Matthew Lugg, the county council’s director of highways and transportation, said: ‘This is great news for the residents of Earl Shilton. The bypass will improve safety, cut congestion and reduce noise and pollution.’
