Leicester bids to become leading city of cycling

Leicester City Council is seeking to become the leading cycling city in England.

The council will make an application to Cycling England’s recently-announced competition to find the country’s first ‘cycling city’ and 10 new ‘cycling towns’, and bid for a share of the £47M funding available.

Cllr Patrick Kitterick, city council lead for regeneration and transport, said: ‘We are confident the city’s positive record of getting more people cycling, more safely, and more often, places us in a strong position to work in partnership with Cycling England as the country’s first cycling city.’

The bid will seek match-funding to help achieve nine priorities by 2011, including addressing missing links in the cycling network, especially in the city centre, and continuous provision for on-road cycling along all major roads and key junctions. To aid the bid, the council is approaching local organisations for support.
