Leeds submits bid for trolleybus plan

The business case for a £276m trolleybus scheme in Leeds is set to be submitted to the Department for Transport (DfT).

Transport authority, Metro, and Leeds City Council, are working in partnership to develop the New Generation Transport (NGT) proposals, which would replace the scrapped supertram scheme.

The DfT has promised to give a decision on whether it has received programme entry by December. The NGT scheme would initially cover a distance of 14km and link key trip generators, including the city’s hospitals and universities. The preferred option is to use electrically-powered trolleybuses.

In total, 90% of the capital cost of the NGT scheme will be funded through the regional funding allocation, with 10% to be funded through Metro and Leeds council.
