Leeds’ measures to curb taxi jams

Leeds City Council is trying to combat congestion caused by taxis queuing in the city centre.

The council has set up two temporary ranks to ease the strain on the city’s roads, but the removal of a taxi rank at Leeds Bradford Airport and lack of parking near Leeds train station has resulted in the problem persisting.

A council spokesman said the problem occurred when ‘too many’ taxis tried to use the most popular ranks. ‘The rail station is regarded by many as the main city centre rank but efforts are being made to encourage both the public and taxis to also use other locations,’ he said.

‘It is vital that taxi-drivers work with us so that key points, particularly around the train station and The Headrow, do not become clogged and cause problems.’ The council is working with police, Metro and local taxi firms in order to alleviate the problem.
