Learning from the Belgians

The Scottish Government has highlighted the Belgian region of Flanders as an excellent example of how to manage waste.

Environment secretary, Richard Lochhead, last week visited the city of Ghent to see how Scotland could learn from the Flemish experience.

‘The record of Flanders in waste management speaks for itself,’ he said. ‘They have a recycling rate of 70%, excellent waste-prevention plans, and a strong network of centres to ensure goods can be reused.’

He said the Government was looking across Europe and beyond for good examples of waste prevention as it formulates the review of the national waste plan.
