Landscape character should shape road design, says agency

The relaxation of road design standards and the use of tunnelling and earth mounding in road construction are being championed by the Countryside Agency.
An agency discussion note highlights three good practice examples where landscape character has guided road designs, including the use of slate and stone-faced walls instead of metal crash barriers in widening the A470 trunk road through the Snowdonia National Park. The proposed twin-bore tunnels for the A3 at Hindhead scheme through a site of special scientific interest are also praised.
Kathleen Covill, senior policy adviser, said: ‘When roads have to be built, we want them to be built to a standard which reduces the impacts on the countryside.’
