More than £2M, saved from reducing the amount of landfilled waste, is to be spent on road and footway repairs in Cheshire.
Cheshire County Council estimates the amount of waste sent to landfill dropped by more than 50,000t last year – or 20% – making £2.1M available.
Money will be spent repairing estate and rural roads and footways, hopefully before the end of March. Andrew Needham, Cheshire’s executive member for environment, said: ‘There has been a significant fall in the amount of rubbish we are having to landfill.
‘Recycling at our household waste recycling centres has more than doubled to 65% under our new contractor H W Martin, and we have seen a 50% reduction in landfill from the centres.’
The money will be distributed based on the lengths of footways and unclassified rural and urban roads in each of the six districts.
