Landfill reduction plan gets£65M in PFI credits

A multi-million pound proposal to slash landfill waste in North Yorkshire has won £65M in PFI credits from the Government.

The proposal by North Yorkshire County Council and the City of York Council includes plans for a mechanical and biological treatment plant and energy from waste plant – as well as plans to increase recycling and composting.

Councils aim to divert from landfill over three-quarters of municipal waste by 2033. A procurement process will take place, and the type of technology will depend on an evaluation of the bids received.

Environment minister Joan Ruddock said: ‘I welcome the ambitious commitment made by the North Yorkshire County Council and York City Council partnership.’ It is hoped that alternatives to landfilling waste in the area will be operational by 2012/13.
