Lancs to trial speed limit programme

Lancashire CC has vowed to introduce 20mph limits in residential areas across the county.

Leader of the council, Geoff Driver, said every residential area would have a 20mph limit by 2013. But the council has insisted it will not go for the blanket approach.

Tim Ashton, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: ‘We’ll establish 20mph limits in residential areas where we think they will be effective in reducing vehicle speeds and cutting casualties.

‘At the same time, we’ll adopt a common sense approach rather than put in blanket 20mph areas, as there’s clearly a need to keep traffic moving on through-routes.

‘The test we’ll use is to ask whether a 20mph limit will be effective in reducing vehicle speeds and reducing casualties – if it will, we’ll do it.’
