Labour record slammed over road network growth

The UK’s road network has grown 15 times faster than the rail network under Labour, according to figures revealed by the Liberal Democrats.

The figures show that 405 miles of new motorway and trunk road has been constructed since 1997, compared with just 27 miles of new railway.

The total length of Britain’s railway network actually fell by 185 miles between 1994 and 2004, while over the same period, the amount of motorway grew by 185 miles.

Lib Dem shadow transport secretary, Norman Baker, said: ‘These figures show that behind their green façade, the Government has been pursuing the same old, unsustainable Tory policy of treating new roads as new investment and new rail as subsidy.

‘Ministers must realise by now that they cannot simply build their way out of congestion on our roads. Their transport polices are unnecessarily increasing carbon emission and undermining the fight against climate change.’

He said almost 10 times as much had been spent on building new motorways as laying new railway track under Labour.
