LGA renews calls for a tax return

Council leaders have renewed their calls on the Government to ‘fulfil its promise’ and return money raised through landfill tax back to local authorities.

The Local Government Association said an ‘open and fair’ way of returning the money to local councils was needed to ensure the £620M bill was not picked up by taxpayers.

Landfill tax will be increased next week (1 April) from £32 to £40 per tonne of rubbish. This is the equivalent to £30 per household in Britain annually, according to the LGA.

It said that despite ‘repeated requests’, the Government had yet to demonstrate in a ‘clear and transparent way’ how the money was being given back. Local authorities currently have to request a share of the revenue raised by contacting DEFRA.
