LBCs want to curtail mayor’s CIL powers

The majority of London boroughs want to limit the mayor of London’s power to apply the community infrastructure levy (CIL) to just the Crossrail project during the scheme’s infancy.

However, some councils have expressed concern over the implications this might have on the boroughs which do not directly benefit from it. There are fears this could mean priority is given to funding Crossrail over other strategic transport investment, such as plugging the hole in Transport for London’s finances.

Dr Dick Sorabji, London Councils’ corporate director of policy and public affairs, said both sides of the argument would be considered before a final response to the CIL consultation was drawn up.

He also suggested that the intention to restrict Section 106 should be postponed or at least delayed until after the CIL was bedded in.
