LBC will reward motorists that give up their vehicles

Islington Council is set to offer financial rewards to residents that surrender their parking permits, as part of its climate change plan.

The London borough is proposing to offer a £100 voucher towards the cost of a new bike, or free car club membership for a year, to drivers deciding not to renew their vehicle permit. It is also planning to install more secure bicycle parking.

The plans are among a package of new measures being considered through the council’s climate change fund, which is likely to get under way next year.

Cllr Lucy Watt, Islington council’s executive member for environment, said: ‘Encouraging good behaviour rather than telling people how to live their lives is a more effective way of achieving lasting change, and this is why are going to reward motorists who give up their car.’
