Knowsley unveils £13M treatment plant to cut Merseyside landfill

A £13M, new-technology waste recycling and treatment facility, tipped to save £1.5M in disposal costs annually, has been given the go-ahead by Knowsley Council.
The plant, based at Huyton Business Park, will treat up to 50,000t of waste from Merseyside homes each year, preventing more than 80% of it going to the landfill.
The technology, developed by Fairport Engineering, will use an environmentally-friendly, low-temperature heat-treatment process to convert non-hazardous household waste into renewable fuel products. It will also recover recyclable materials much as metals and glass. The Government is paying £5.6M of the total cost, as part of DEFRA’s new technology demonstrator programme. Construction is expected to begin later this year.
