Kingston contract signals longer-term strategy

A 15-year partnership contract has been agreed by the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames to renew ageing streetlights.

Kingston’s award of the 15-year framework contact to Cartledge, the lighting arm of May Gurney, is part of its aim to move away from traditional short-term maintenance contracts. It also covers signs and bollards. Cllr Ian Reid, executive member for performance and improvement, claimed that the borough had moved away from ‘adversarial’, input-based contracts. ‘These new arrangements are based on good relationships and working together in a spirit of partnership in an honest and open manner, based on trust and shared aims,’ he said.
