Kent fury over lack of transport infrastructure cash

Kent County Council leader, Paul Carter, has attacked the Government over the lack of funding for transport in the county, in the face of huge home-building schemes.
Carter sounded what he called a ‘wake up’ call as he opened the £28M Leybourne and West Malling Bypass last week.
The council had criticised the Department for Transport before over a U-turn on the public inquiry for the bypass in 2003. The project was held up as the DfT deliberated on whether or not to have an inquiry, before ruling against having one (Surveyor, 30 January 2003).
This time, Carter said the council would continue to press for funds for more roads and community facilities to support the huge housing growth and business development coming to Kent. He said: ‘We have a massive job on our hands in trying to get the money for roads and other infrastructure.’
The bypass, a council aspiration for more than 30 years, will relieve Castle Way of more than 30,000 vehicles a day – one in eight of which are lorries.
The 4km route is part of the county council’s long-term commitment to improving the A228 between the Thames Gateway growth area and west Kent.
