Kent encourages staff to leave car at home

Kent County Council is offering its 1,600 employees an alternative to using their own vehicle at work with a car-share pilot scheme aimed at reducing car use.
The council has joined forces with Streetcar, a pay-as-you-go car club, to encourage people working at County Hall in Maidstone to car share or use public transport to get to and from work, and use a Streetcar vehicle for business use.
The offer is also open to neighbouring businesses and residents.
Kent council cabinet member for transportation, Keith Ferrin, said: ‘As a major employer, it is right for us to take the lead and offer our staff the flexibility to leave their car at home and use a Streetcar for appointments and meetings. I’m also pleased the car club will be available for others in the area, and if the pilot is successful, we can look at expanding the scheme.’
Meanwhile, Kent’s 12 district councils and the county council have signed an agreement to improve services and achieve savings for local people.
Known as the Kent Commitment, the agreement targets five areas for further improvement, including: engaging the local communities in decision-making; shaping economic growth; regeneration of each part of the county; working together to reduce costs; and providing a greater customer experience.
