Ten pilot projects which improved road safety, while encouraging the mixing of different road-users, have been held up as success stories.

The Department for Transport is encouraging other local highway authorities to follow suit and remove guardrails and other clutter, after the 10 ‘mixed-priority route’ projects reduced casualties by 24-60%.

The London Borough of Lambeth told Surveyor nobody had been killed or seriously injured in the nine months after the Wandsworth Road scheme (pictured) was completed. A new Local Transport Note applauds the projects’ innovation, which included a shared-use carriageway and using street furniture as bollards.
