Joint effort puts bus passengers in fast lane

Gateshead Council has joined forces with Nexus and Go North East to launch Tyne and Wear’s first superoute for buses.

The new bus lane runs alongside existing traffic lanes on the Felling bypass, creating more reliable, frequent bus journeys to Heworth Metro, and on to the centres of Gateshead and Newcastle.

It will be the first of a new generation of superoutes planned across Tyne and Wear to provide significant priority routes along main roads into urban centres.

Cllr David Bollands, a Gateshead Council cabinet member, said: ‘The new bus lane on Felling bypass will benefit more than 1.5M passengers every year by providing an extra lane alongside the existing two for other traffic.

‘This new superoute shows Gateshead Council is committed to leading the way in creating better bus routes, to beat congestion and reduce the impact of climate change.’
