A revamp of Lancashire CC’s environment department is likely to lead to the loss of several jobs.
A spokesman for the council said it was ‘early days’, so the authority had not yet decided how many jobs would be pruned and did not know how the plans would impact on the highways service.
But staff have already been asked if they would consider voluntary redundancy, and some have expressed an interest. A report was being considered by the council’s cabinet on Thursday.
The environment department currently employs around 1,000 people, and the report says the aim is to produce ‘a smaller organisation’. The new, tailored department will be more ‘value driven’ and could have ‘greater clarity and purpose’, the report adds.
Lancashire CC has already announced its intention to work more closely with district councils on highways issues in the future.
