It’s blast off for Liverpool’s sustainable bus-rail interchange

A £32M bus-rail interchange which opened its doors to the public this week has ‘broken new ground’ on sustainability.
Neil Scales chair of Merseytravel, hailed the Liverpool South Parkway interchange’s use of waste blast-furnace slag instead of concrete and 2.3t of recycled aluminum for the roof.
Geo-thermal heat pumps, using 18 bore holes, would save up to 60% on heating costs, while some electricity would be provided by solar cells on south-facing windows.
The interchange has a single booking office for bus, rail and airport journeys from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, which it links with a bus shuttle. Merseytravel hopes to add Trans-Pennine rail services to those to Merseyside, Manchester, Crewe and Birmingham.
