Integration cost ‘too high’ for rural areas

 
Effective transport integration is unaffordable in rural areas, according to the council covering the most sparsely-populated county in England and Wales.

In its response to the Welsh Assembly Government’s draft programme of action on climate change, Powys CC acknowledges the county has one of the highest ecological footprints per capita in Wales.

The council specifies and supports most of Powys’ bus network, connecting main settlements at roughly two-hourly frequency during working hours.

But, it adds: ‘Unfortunately, the low frequencies that can be afforded are not conducive to effective integration between modes and thus can make only a limited contribution to reducing transport-related emissions.’ The council now urges ‘early implementation’ of the Local Transport Act 2008.
