Institute’s award presentation goes with a swing

Goole’s new Dutch River Swing Bridge has landed the East Riding of Yorkshire Council a top award for civil engineering.
Replacement of the old Dutch River Bridge was hailed as a ‘challenging project’ when the authority was presented with the Yorkshire and Humber award for excellence in civil engineering, at the annual Institution of Civil Engineers ceremony this month. The new, £4.75M bridge involved 200t of steelwork to create a 6m crossing, including a 40m swing bridge over the Dutch River.
Judges were impressed with the planning, design, construction and commissioning of the project, and in particular, the partnership the council had with framework consultant Mason Clark Associates, and design and build contractor Birse Civils. The council’s project beat 15 of the region’s best schemes, including the A1(M)/M62 Holmfield.
