Institue finds answer to effects of extreme rainfall in ‘lost rivers’

The Government has been urged to promote the de-culverting of ‘lost rivers’ to reduce flood risk.

The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management has called for guidance on carrying out de-culverting, to provide ‘an effective climate change adaptation measure for more extreme rainfall events’ by removing a restriction on flood flows.

While the Environment Agency discourages culverting, and the water framework directive urges the improvement of ‘heavily-modified’ water bodies, there is little advice or funds for such schemes.

CIWEM urged councils to identify further opportunities following the success of the restoration of the south London’s River Quaggy as part of an £18M flood alleviation scheme.
