Inspection of Humber Bridge will leave engineers highly strung

Internal inspection of suspension cables on the Humber Bridge is being carried out, with results expected in the autumn.

The inspection is primarily a visual assessment of the cables’ condition – both externally and internally – to enable the Humber Bridge Board to assess the load-carrying capacity of the structure.

Peter Hill, the board’s general manager and bridgemaster, said: ‘This is the first phase of inspection, which we intend to repeat every 10 years, so that the rate of deterioration, if any, can be mapped.’

This programme will assess the effectiveness of measures to prevent corrosion, including an expected de-humidification scheme that would be the largest in the world.
