Transport for London (TfL) is trialling ‘innovative’ new street benches in Shepherd’s Bush, in an attempt to reduce street clutter.
The benches will contain traffic light control boxes and the first of these ‘bench controllers’ has been installed at the Westfield White City development. A second is due to be installed opposite Shepherds Bush common next month.
TfL graduate engineer, Rory Stevenson, who designed the contemporary benches, said: ‘I am sure the bench controller will continue to be successful in the next few planned locations, and I hope this means we will see London’s streets and pavements transformed.’
Nina Webster, of TfL’s walking and accessibility team, said the idea to combine the traffic light controller with a bench would enable the provision of more seating on busy high streets where space was limited.
