Infrastructure in safe hands as Welsh raise budget 16%

The Welsh Assembly Government has announced £28M for integrated transport in Wales, under the transport grant settlement.

The settlement forms part of a £117.6M investment in Wales’ local transport infrastructure, up 16.3% on the previous year. The Safer routes in communities schemes, which help local authorities develop safe routes for walking and cycling and improve accessibility, have been allocated an extra £10M.

Projects which are supported under the Walking and cycling programme will benefit from £3.3M. The transport grant will also invest £18M in road infrastructure works at Church Village in Rhondda Cynon Taff, more than £1M for the Wrexham Industrial Estate access road, £10M for the Ceredigion link road, and £7.8M to improve public transport in Swansea.

Depute first minister, Ieuan Wyn Jones, said: ‘This allocation will support transport schemes throughout Wales – helping us ensure sustainable development and prosperous communities in every part of our country. ‘This announcement helps deliver our One Wales commitments, with increased support for walking and cycling schemes.’
