Industry’s infrastructure plea to new chancellor

The Freight Transport Association has called on the new chancellor to make a concerted effort to tackle road congestion in its submission ahead of the Comprehensive Spending Review.
Among its five priorities, the FTA is urging the chancellor to: focus roads investment on key motorway and trunk road arteries that form industry’s domestic and international trade routes; speed up the programme of road-widening schemes on key sections of the road network; and achieve early delivery of small-scale schemes and ‘better use measure’ where these provide low-cost, early relief from congestion.
Simon Chapman, the FTA’s chief economist, said: ‘The chancellor must heed the advice of Sir Rod Eddington’s study into Britain’s long-term transport needs in his spending decisions over the summer. Infrastructure investment can yield high returns for the economy.’
