Industry swaps its technology for cars

York is the site chosen to test a new navigation system that will locate the best car park from a driver’s current location, taking account of space availability, bay fill rate and journey time, ITS UK members heard last week.

The product, involving York University and location-based services specialist Trackm8, will be among the first commercial outcomes of the Government-funded FREEflow initiative – aiming to improve transport network management with tools from other industries.

Mouchel’s Andrew Wiseman reported parallel work on mapping network-enabled warfare (NEW) techniques – used to manage battlefield resources – across to transport.

Analysis of smartcard fare payment data could identify factors including trip rate variations, successive linking of boardings within a journey and changes in network use, said Westminster University’s Professor Peter White. Operators could then differentiate charges by time of day, and monitor impact.
