Some 64% of the UK’s highways industry is against road-user charging as a method of cutting congestion and environmental damage.
This conclusion has emerged from the first major online opinion poll conducted among trade visitors and exhibitors to Traffex/ Parkex (see p11 for further comment).
The findings add weight to the 1.8 million UK road-users who petitioned against RUC on the Downing Street website.
Meanwhile, Sir Rod Eddington told the transport select committee this week that it would take 10 years to introduce RUC, which he argued was a ‘pretty ambitious’ target.
He urged the Government to address the public’s concerns over surveillance, and the cost to motorists. He also said London’s Crossrail scheme was vital to prevent congestion in the capital spiralling out of control.
