Independently green: Bristol's mayor talks sustainable transport

 

With the Supreme Court ordering the Government to tidy up its act on air quality, Transport Network spoke to the mayor of the European Green Capital, Bristol, to see if there was anything the rest of the country could learn in the fight against pollution.

George Ferguson was elected independent mayor of Bristol in 2012 and has set about charting his own course in local government ever since, culminating in the city winning the 2015 green capital of Europe status. Famous for his red trousers and outspoken manner, Mr Ferguson is unafraid to spearhead schemes that could bring him into the conflict with residents. The resident parking scheme, 20mph zones, a potential Low Emissions Zone and his work to develop a city region combined authority were all on the agenda when we spoke.
