Inadequate signage on tram lines gets city in a fine mess

Sheffield City Council has been illegally fining motorists for using a bus/tram gate on part of the city’s tram route, because its signs were inadequate, the National Parking Appeals Service (NPAS) has ruled.

It had already upheld a complaint by a member of the public that there was no clear signing of a bus lane on the Hillsborough section of the tram network, and it has now dismissed an appeal by the council.

The NPAS said the approaches should have been clearly marked ‘Bus lane’, which they were not and, until signs and road markings were altered, the restriction should not be enforced.

The council, which had argued that the Department for Transport had seen and approved its plans, including signage, before it began enforcement, said it was reviewing road markings at the gate and taking further legal advice. Fines were suspended for the moment.
